Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit?

If you want to have an open air fire (brush or agricultural), you need an approved permit. Campfires (60 cm diameter x 60 cm height) and fires that are contained in a manufactured, non-combustible container (no larger than 1m x 1m x 1m), burning clean, dry wood for cooking, heating and enjoyment do not require a fire permit. These fires are permitted in the Rural and Urban Settlement Areas and are exempt from issued burn bans; however, they are still subject to certain terms and conditions which are contained in the Open Air Burn Bylaw.

How can I obtain a burn permit?

You may register online using this website, visit or call the Township office at 613-774-2105.

What can I burn?

Untreated wood, brush, tree limbs, leaves, and branches. Reasonable minimal amounts of paper and/or cardboard can be used solely for the purpose of starting an open air fire.

What is a brush fire and what is an agricultural fire?

Brush Fires are a maximum 3m x 3m x 3m in size and at least 25m from roads, buildings, etc. Agricultural Fires are 10m in diameter x 5m in height on land zoned Rural or Agricultural.

Who can obtain a burn permit?

Only residents living in approved areas can obtain a permit for a brush fire or agricultural fire. Permits are conditional and may be revoked at any time.

Do I need a permit for each property I burn on?

A burn permit is required for each property identified by a separate PIN number.
